IPOH, Sept 13 (Bernama) -- Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) believes the matriculation programme should be retained as one of the key pathways to higher education institutions to ensure fair and inclusive access for all students.
In a statement, UPSI’s Corporate Communications Division said abolishing the matriculation programme would restrict students’ opportunities to pursue higher education and would not align with the country’s long-term educational development goals.
“UPSI remains confident that the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Education are committed to ensuring Malaysian children have access to higher education opportunities, in line with the Federal Constitution and the National Education Philosophy,” it said.
“UPSI sincerely hopes the issue will not develop into a prolonged polemic and urges all parties to work together in upholding the quality of the country’s higher education,” it added.
Yesterday, it was reported that Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany) president Tang Yi Ze had urged the matriculation programme to be abolished, proposing that Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) results be used as the sole benchmark for entry into public universities.
