KUALA TERENGGANU, Sept 29 (Bernama) -- Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) today organised a surau and beach cleanliness programme at Pantai Pandak here as part of efforts to raise awareness on environmental preservation and to foster closer ties with the local community.

The inaugural programme, organised in collaboration with the Kuala Terengganu City Council (MBKT), the Kuala Terengganu District and Land Office and Geng Plastik Ija, drew about 500 participants, including members of the local community.

TH group managing director and chief executive officer Mustakim Mohamad said the initiative was part of TH’s efforts to foster a spirit of volunteerism while emphasising that caring for the environment is both an act of worship and a shared responsibility.

“We consistently support sustainability initiatives. As an Islamic institution, we strongly encourage community-driven efforts, particularly those that raise awareness about sustainability, whether through maintaining the cleanliness of surau or beaches, so that the community as a whole benefits,” he told reporters here.

Also present was Kuala Terengganu Mayor Datuk Jusman Ibrahim.

Elaborating further, Mustakim said the programme was part of TH’s annual commitment to integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles with Islamic values, including the five principles of Maqasid Syariah, which emphasise the preservation of religion, life, intellect, lineage and property.

“This initiative reflects TH’s commitment not only in managing the haj pilgrimage but also as an Islamic institution that cares about the wellbeing of society and the preservation of the ecosystem,” he said.

He added that the programme is planned as an annual event and will be extended to other states.

“God willing, next year we will head to Perak, and every year after that we will choose different states so that this programme continues,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jusman said that aside from beach cleanliness, surau upkeep was also given attention as it is an essential facility for the public.

The one-day programme featured various activities, including a gotong-royong (communal clean-up) at Pantai Pandak, tree planting and maintenance works at Surau Haji Awang, Kampung Pantai Pandak.
