SEA Deaf Games 2025: Mother’s Love Behind Malaysia’s Chess Gold

JAKARTA, Aug 23 (Bernama) -- A mother's love knows no bounds. 

This idiom perfectly applies in the life of Malaysian chess player Loo Pin Xie, 20, who clinched a gold medal in the standard category at the SEA Deaf Games 2025 here today. 

The win shows the years of perseverance, discipline. and above all the unwavering love of his mother, Ng Kwi Chuan, 54, who has been by his side every step of the way.

“Firstly, I want to say thank you to all the people of Malaysia, and my family and friends who have encouraged and supported me.

“I have been deaf since the age of three, but the one who is always, always with me is my mother. My mother accompanies me to chess competitions,” he said when met today. 

Ng said that she previously worked as a computer engineer but resigned and chose to be a full-time housewife when Pin Xie was seven years old to focus on him.

She has never regretted her decision and considers it her duty to continue being her son’s protector even now by flying to Jakarta to be by his side and provide unwavering support.

“He had been lip-reading, and we actually thought it was just a speech delay but when he was taken to a speech therapist, it was confirmed that he had a hearing loss. 

“Most importantly, he loves chess and so we just support him in whatever he wants,” she added.

Meanwhile, another Malaysian, Ainnur Asyikin Jupineh struck gold in the women’s standard chess event.
