KUCHING, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s digital creative industry has generated more than RM92.5 billion in revenue and RM12.1 billion in exports, attracted RM85.7 billion in investments and created over 11,000 high-value jobs.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the industry’s growth demonstrated the increasing economic potential of animation, games and digital content, beyond their creative value.
“We have seen homegrown intellectual properties (IP) such as household favourites ‘Upin & Ipin’, ‘Ejen Ali’ and ‘Mechamato’ grow beyond our shores.
“A strong Malaysian IP can create new commercial opportunities, support business growth and generate highly skilled jobs. This is why we must look not only from a creative perspective, but also for its economic potential,” he said in his speech at the Borneo Animation and Games Festival (BAGFest) 2026, here today.
He said Malaysia was also on track to see the digital economy contribute 30 per cent of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030, while creating 500,000 high-value digital jobs over the next four years.
He added that Sarawak had an important role to play in the next phase of Malaysia’s digital growth, given its creative community, distinctive stories and cultures, as well as its growing digital ecosystem.
Gobind said the Federal Government would continue working with Sarawak to strengthen its digital capabilities and connect the state’s creative industry to opportunities across Malaysia, Southeast Asia and beyond.
“Through this partnership, we also want to support Sarawak’s ambition to strengthen its position as a regional hub for animation and games, and this festival is a great example of what we can achieve when we work together towards a shared objective,” he said.
BAGFest 2026, themed ‘Forging Sarawak’s Digital Future as the Regional Hub for Animation and Games’, is the first international animation and games festival of its scale to be held in Borneo.
