NEW YORK, June 20 (Bernama-RIA Novosti) -- Violence against children in armed conflicts increased by a quarter last year compared to 2023, according to an annual UN report.
"In 2024, violence against children in armed conflict reached unprecedented levels, with a staggering 25 per cent surge in the number of grave violations in comparison with 2023," the secretary-general said in the report "Children and armed conflict" released on Thursday.
The UN verified 36,221 "grave violations" committed in 2024 and 5,149 that were committed earlier but verified in 2024, Sputnik/RIA Novosti reported.
The violations affected 22,495 children in 2024.
Non-state armed groups are responsible for approximately 50 per cent of these violations, the report said.
The document highlighted that state actors and non-state armed groups, in conducting their war strategies, demonstrated a "lack of respect for the special protections afforded to children”.
