KUALA UMPUR, Sept 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening longstanding ties with Lebanon through peacekeeping, humanitarian and technical cooperation, as well as expanding economic partnership.
Malaysian Ambassador to Lebanon Datuk Azri Mat Yacob said both countries have enjoyed deep and enduring ties since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1965.
He said Malaysia’s commitment to Lebanon is reflected through the continuous deployment of the Malaysian Battalion (MALBATT) under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) since 2007, as well as various humanitarian and capacity-building initiatives under the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP).
“Through the MTCP, Malaysia has recently trained more than 100 Lebanese healthcare professionals in critical areas such as trauma care, infection control, maternal health and psychosocial support,” he said during a reception to celebrate Malaysia’s 68th National Day on Friday.
Azri also highlighted Malaysia’s growing economic engagement with Lebanon, noting that bilateral trade recorded a 43 per cent increase between 2020 and 2024.
“This growth demonstrates the resilience of our economic partnership and the potential for future collaboration,” he said.
He encouraged Lebanese tourists to visit Malaysia during Visit Malaysia Year 2026, noting that visa-free arrangements between the two countries are expected to ease travel and foster closer exchanges.
In a statement, the embassy said the reception reaffirmed the enduring friendship and strong ties between Malaysia and Lebanon.
The reception welcomed more than 250 guests, including Lebanese Cabinet ministers and officials, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, academics, media representatives and the Malaysian diaspora.
Lebanese Minister of Information Paul Morcos attended as the representative of the President, Prime Minister, and Speaker of Parliament, together with other Cabinet ministers.
To symbolise cultural harmony and friendship, the reception featured Lebanese models dressed in traditional Malaysian attire.
LED screens showcasing Malaysia’s trade, investment, and tourism opportunities also offered guests a preview of the country’s attractions ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
