ISKANDAR PUTERI, June 19 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today called for economic growth to be firmly rooted in ethics, culture and humanity, even as the nation embraces rapid technological advancement.
Delivering a special address in conjunction with the Nikkei Forum Medini Johor 2025, Anwar said the region's fast-paced development must ultimately serve its people, not just in material terms, but through education, technology, and deeply-rooted moral principles.
“Humanity means better livelihood, better education, healthcare and technology. But, at the same time, it must be tied to values, ethics and humanity,” he said.
Anwar emphasised that while Johor and Malaysia are progressing in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors and digital economy, there must also be a concerted effort to preserve the nation’s cultural and civilisational roots.
He drew upon his recent visit to Japan, citing the work of renowned Japanese philosopher Toshihiko Izutsu, who studied Islam in depth, to illustrate how ethical and philosophical understanding can strengthen bilateral ties.
“We must urge the younger generation to focus not just on new disciplines, but on values, culture and civilisation,” the prime minister said.
Anwar said that the country’s development, particularly in fast-growing states like Johor, must prioritise human elements such as quality of life, education, health, and technological access.
“Development in Malaysia and Johor is for the people, which means the human dimension must be factored in. There is a need for the current generation to focus on new disciplines.
“Yes, we may fall behind if we do not adopt technology and AI, but it must be done in a way that upholds our moral values, local cultures, and languages,” he said.
Commenting on the global economic landscape, Anwar noted that Johor continues to register strong economic performance despite mounting global uncertainties, including unilateral tariff policies introduced by United States President Donald Trump and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
He commended the state's positive growth trajectory to the strategic efforts undertaken by government-linked agencies such as Iskandar Investment Bhd (IIB), particularly in driving high-impact developments and securing quality investments.
Co-organised by IIB and Japan’s Nikkei Inc., the two-day Nikkei Forum Medini Johor 2025 is hosted by the Johor state government with support from the Johor Economic Planning Division, Invest Johor, and the Iskandar Puteri City Council.
