BELGRADE, June 7 (Bernama-dpa) -- Kosovo heads to the polls on Sunday for its third general election in 16 months, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s left-wing party, Vetevendosje (Self-Determination), remains the clear favourite.
The snap election became necessary because the previous parliament was unable to elect a new head of state within the required timeframe. This was due to a failure to reach the quorum required by the constitution.
The term of office of the previous President, Vjosa Osmani, expired on April 4.
The last vote was held at the end of December 2025, but Kurti was unable to form a government due to the balance of power in the parliament elected in February that year.
The election of a successor to Osmani also remains a task for the future parliament, requiring the presence of at least 80 of the 120 lawmakers for the vote.
In recent votes, there were not enough MPs in the chamber, which is why no valid election could take place.
As this quorum is out of reach for Vetevendosje and its partners alone, the consensus of at least one major opposition force is required.
The small Balkan country, therefore, risks falling into a cycle of regular parliamentary elections.
