KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) marks its 59th anniversary today, celebrating nearly six decades of transformation from a traditional wire service into a premier multimedia organisation at the forefront of digital and AI-assisted journalism.

Established under the BERNAMA Act 1967, the agency has since expanded its footprint significantly, now delivering verified news through a comprehensive ecosystem including digital platforms, Bernama Radio, Bernama TV and an extensive social media network.

Bernama Special Projects Editor M. Govind Nair said the agency’s growth reflects its ability to adapt to the changing media landscape while remaining a vital pillar of Malaysia’s information ecosystem.

“Bernama has evolved beyond a conventional news agency into a multimedia organisation embracing digital journalism, broadcasting, and AI-assisted newsroom operations.

“It remains a trusted source of verified and balanced news for the public, government agencies and the international community,” he said.

Govind Nair, who has served with Bernama for over 45 years, noted that despite the rapid flow of information in the social media era, the agency has never compromised on its core principles of verification, fairness, and balance.

He said that while journalistic values are being tested by commercial pressures and the race for immediacy, Bernama’s credibility remains its greatest strength, built on a reputation for professionalism rather than just speed.

Addressing the next generation of media practitioners, he advised young Bernama journalists to remain curious and adaptable to new technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI).

“Never compromise on accuracy and credibility. While embracing new tools and skills, never lose sight of the fundamentals of good journalism – integrity, professionalism, empathy, and service to the public,” he added.

Meanwhile, former Bernama chief executive officer and editor-in-chief Datuk Mokhtar Hussain said improving skills in writing style, questioning techniques, data collection and critical thinking were important elements to maintain the integrity of every news report produced.

He stressed that every editorial staff member must always adhere to Section 4 of the Bernama Act 1967, which demands that news presentation be done in a complete, objective, balanced and non-prejudicial manner.

“This is very important to ensure that Bernama’s credibility and reputation are not jeopardised. I am confident that this agency will continue to excel if values such as accuracy, fairness and objectivity continue to be applied in every news piece,” he said.

Apart from the core values of journalism, Mokhtar also stressed the importance of mastering current technology, especially AI, in line with the increasingly challenging global media transformation.

Mokhtar said Bernama journalists also need to deepen their knowledge in the field of data analytics and technology-based fact-checking processes to strengthen the quality of reports amidst the rapid flow of digital information today.

The move is seen as a two-pronged strategy to ensure that the agency is not only fast in disseminating news, but also remains the main and authentic reference for the country's information ecosystem.

Adding to the discourse on the agency’s future, former Bernama general manager and editor-in-chief Datuk Yong Soo Heong said the agency must leverage its long-standing credibility to “cut through the noise” of information overload on social media.

Yong, who is also the Malaysian Press Institute president, said Bernama’s role in nation-building and bridging information gaps is now more important than ever.

“Bernama’s role is more than just coverage. Analyses and explainers attract more attention and understanding. Such a progression also raises the level of journalism within the organisation,” he said, citing the need for more in-depth reporting similar to international agencies like China’s Xinhua.

He also welcomed Bernama’s initiative to engage veteran journalists to strengthen its offerings, while urging the newsroom to utilise its Library and Resource Centre and AI tools to produce impactful stories for the rakyat.

Nevertheless, he cautioned against the erosion of journalistic values, stating that the agency must prioritise well-researched analyses and information over “non-journalism matters” or pressures from external parties.

To younger journalists, Yong advised them to read widely and continue promoting Malaysia’s diversity, reminding them that journalism is a rewarding career for those willing to work hard.

“Stop misusing the word ‘exclusive’ when it is just reporting on an organisation doing ordinary CSR work, and you are the only reporter there.

“Being a journalist is not purely a 9-to-5 job, but it has its interesting attractions to make your career satisfying and rewarding when you don’t shun hard work and go the extra mile,” he added.

Even after almost six decades, Bernama continues to strengthen its international presence through collaborations with regional and global news agencies.

Beyond its editorial functions, the agency has successfully expanded its commercial capabilities, including managing media centres for major international meetings and exhibitions, as well as book publishing.

Bernama currently has 967 employees, comprising permanent, contract and part-time staff.
