MCMC Identifies 15,296 Fake Accounts Using Names Of 26 Royal Family Members - Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 (Bernama) -- A total of 15,296 fake accounts using the names of 26 members of the Royal family were identified between January and April this year, based on monitoring by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and public complaints.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said that these fake accounts included those involving the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin.

Fahmi added that this matter was presented to the Sultan of Selangor during an audience today to update His Royal Highness on the latest reports regarding the removal of fake accounts involving the Royal family.

Following this, requests for removal were executed, and to date, social media platform providers have taken down 14,750 of those accounts, he said in a Facebook post today.

Fahmi added that His Royal Highness was also informed about the implementation of the Electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) identity verification system as a measure to strengthen the protection of children and families in the digital environment.

He expressed his gratitude for the views of His Royal Highness, decrees, and advice regarding various current issues, particularly concerning the abuse of online platforms and 3R issues (religion, race, and the Royal institution), which has become increasingly concerning of late.

Fahmi also acknowledged the Sultan of Selangor's concerns regarding various current issues circulating on social media and the methods used by authorities to address them.
