JAKARTA, March 7 (Bernama) -- Indonesia has put discussions related to the US-led Board of Peace (BoP) initiative on hold as it focuses on monitoring the escalating conflict involving Iran and ensuring the safety of its citizens in affected areas in the Middle East.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said the decision had been conveyed earlier by Foreign Minister Sugiono.
“As conveyed by the Foreign Minister a few days ago, all discussions regarding the Board of Peace are currently suspended, or in other words, on hold,” she said during a media briefing on Friday. The video of the briefing was shared on social media.
Yvonne said Indonesia’s diplomatic focus at present is on ensuring the safety and protection of Indonesian nationals in conflict-affected areas in the Middle East, particularly Iran.
“We are also focused on preparing anticipatory measures to address the impact of the escalation,” she said.
Earlier, Sugiono was reported to have said that talks related to the Board of Peace (BoP) initiative had been suspended following the outbreak of war in the Middle East.
“All BoP discussions have been suspended because all attention has shifted to the situation in Iran,” he said.
The initiative was originally aimed at supporting post-conflict reconstruction efforts in Gaza, with Indonesia expected to contribute troops to the mission.
