KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 (Bernama) -- The race for the 2024 Malaysian Sportswriters Association (SAM)-100PLUS  Athlete of the Year Award is set to be fiercely contested, featuring a line-up of world-class athletes and Olympians who have brought pride to the nation on the international stage.

Heading the list of five nominees are the country’s second-ranked men’s badminton doubles pair, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, who were also bronze medallists at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The world number two pair will be challenged by women’s bowling ace Sin Li Jane, who has enjoyed a stellar career, most recently winning the 2024 United States Women’s Open, and Nor Farah Ain Abdullah from lawn bowls, who was crowned 2024 National Sportswoman of the Year at the National Sports Awards in May.

The other two shortlisted are famous tower runner Soh Wai Ching and wushu ace Tan Cheong Min

Meanwhile, the contest for the 2024 Best Para Athlete of the Year Award will once again see intense rivalry between two familiar names – para badminton player Cheah Liek Hou and para powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Anak Gustin – as both aim to capture the trophy for the third time since its introduction in 2016.

Three other para athletes, Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli (shot put F20), Datuk Abdul Latif Romly (long jump T20), and Eddy Bernard (sprint T44), are also in the running for the coveted award.

SAM president Norismadi Abd Manap said the winners of both main athlete awards will each receive RM10,000 in cash and a trophy at the awards ceremony, scheduled to be held at Sunway Resort Hotel on  July 14.

"The SAM-100PLUS 2024 Awards will also recognise excellence in sports journalism through six categories: Best Report/News (Print Media), Best Report/News (Electronic Media), Best Commentary (Print Media), Best Commentary (Electronic Media), Best Special Report (Open), and Best Sports Photography," he said at a press conference today.

Norismadi also announced that the SAM leadership unanimously agreed to increase the cash prize for the top journalism award, the Siebel Award, from RM7,000 to RM10,000.

The cash prize for the Popular Sports Commentator Award has also been increased to RM3,000 from RM2,000 previously.
