JAKARTA, July 3 (Bernama) -- A passenger ferry carrying 12 crew members, 53 passengers, and 22 vehicles sank in the Bali Strait late Wednesday night en route to Bali from East Java, local media reported Thursday, citing Indonesian authorities.

At least four passengers have been confirmed dead.

The KMP Tunu, which was sailing from Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi to Gilimanuk Port in Bali, issued a distress call at 11.20 pm local time before sinking at 11.35 pm, according to the Banyuwangi Search and Rescue (SAR) office.

“A distress signal was received, and the ferry was seen sinking by port monitoring officers,” SAR coordinator Wahyu Setiabudi said on Thursday, as quoted by news portal Kompas.

A joint rescue team was deployed at 12.18 am but evacuation was hampered by rough sea conditions.

“Waves reached up to 2.5 metres” at the vessel’s last known location, said the coordinator. He added that 14 people were rescued as of this morning.
