KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 (Bernama) -- Captain Mohamad Akhimullah Anuar Esook emerged as the hero of the national squad by scoring a brace in their 3-2 win over the United States (US) in the Men's Hockey5s World Cup 2024 in Muscat, Oman on Sunday.

The victory gave Malaysia three points to lie second in Group D with four points, the same as hosts Oman, who top the group on better goal difference.

The U.S. (three points) and Fiji (zero points) are third and fourth respectively in the group.

In the match against the U.S. at the Hockey Oman Venue, Malaysia, guided by Wallace Tan, dominated play and took the lead in the 11th minute through a field goal by Mohamad Akhimullah.

The U.S. equalised through a field goal by Harris Pat in the 17th minute but Malaysia shot into the lead again when Syarman Mat Tee slammed in a field goal five minutes later.

Malaysia kept up the pressure with constant attacks and were rewarded in the 25th minute when Mohamad Akhimullah found the net again through a field goal.

Pat reduced the deficit for the U.S. two minutes later to make the score 3-2.

Malaysia will play Fiji in their final group match on Monday afternoon.

Malaysia drew 3-3 with Oman in their opening group match.
