KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Bernama) -- The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) will expand the use of composting technology with the introduction of five mini composting machines which will be able to process up to 20 kilogrammes (kg) of waste a day at five Zero Waste Community Centres (KOSIS) in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Its deputy minister, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the five KOSIS recycling centres are located at Desa Mutiara and Kempas Permai People's Housing Projects (PPR) in Johor Bahru, Johor, Lembah Subang 2 PPR in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Pinggiran Putra Low Cost Housing Project in Kuantan, Pahang and  Jalan Hospital Ipoh Flats.

"This initiative is to enable the community to cultivate recycling practices in addition to encouraging composting to put food scraps to good use," he told the Dewan Negara today.

He was replying to a question from Datuk Lim Pay Hen on KPKT's plans to expand the use of composting machines to produce fertilisers from food waste gathered by the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) nationwide.

He added that the ministry was also planning to place three composting machines with a capacity of 100 kg a day at Malaysian Prisons Department institutions next year, namely Perlis Correctional Centre, Penor Prison in Pahang and Kluang Prison in Johor.

Meanwhile, Akmal Nasrullah said the Compost @ Bazaar Campaign which was organised at Mahkota Square Ramadan Bazaar in Kuantan  by KPKT through SWCorp, succeeded in producing almost 50 kg of fertiliser compost from 190kg of food waste.

"In addition, KPKT also placed a small-scale composting machine at Pinggiran Putra PPR in Kuantan , Pahang with a capacity of 20 kg a day and to date, 87 kg of food waste has been treated and 26 kg of fertiliser compost were produced," he said.
