KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 -- The national dodgeball team is looking to defend their title at the 2019 Asian Dodgeball Championship (ADC) in Hong Kong, and qualify for the 2020 Dodgeball World Cup in Cairo, Egypt.
In the 2017 edition of the competition which Malaysia hosted (then known as the Asia Pacific Dodgeball Championship), the national team won three of the categories contested in, namely the mixed team, men's team and women's team events.
The men's squad head coach Muhammad Heidy Mohd Yusoff said his team had been training hard for the event in the past eight months at the Shah Alam National Sports Complex.
“We began as underdogs, and right now for the ADC, we will be defending all three categories, and it is not an easy task for us.
“Training is our biggest challenge because we are semi-pro and all of us have own day-jobs. After 5 pm, we train for this tournament until midnight,” he told reporters at the Parliament building today.
He was met after the handing over of the Jalur Gemilang by Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman to the Malaysian dodgeball team heading to the ADC.
The national contingent comprising 59 players and officials will leave for Hong Kong tomorrow (Oct 23).
Malaysia will be competing in four categories, namely the men's team, women's team, mixed team and under-21 team events.
Among the other countries participating in the championship are Singapore, Australia, the Philippines, Brunei, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
