IPOH, Sept 29 (Bernama) -- Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) is organising the 1st International Congress on Green Engineering and Sustainable Development (ICGESD 2025), a prestigious event that brings together five international conferences on a single platform.
The two-day hybrid congress, which kicks off today, aims to explore innovative solutions to global challenges in the fields of environment, technology, and sustainable development.
ICGESD 2025, themed 'Sustainable Development: Bridging Engineering and Innovation', features a unique and holistic blend of disciplines.
Among the combined conferences are the International Conference on Smart Cities Development (ICoSCiD), International Conference on Green Technology in Mechanical and Marine Engineering (GTiMME), International Conference on Emerging Technologies, Information Sciences and Mathematics (ICETISM), International Conference on Digital Economy and Sustainable Social Development (ICoDESSD 2025), and he International Conference on Electrical Engineering and Smart Solutions (ICEESS).
PUO director Dr Salmi Che Meh said the congress demonstrates the institute's commitment as a leading TVET institution in realising the nation's sustainability agenda.
"PUO adheres to a holistic TVET education policy grounded on sustainability as the primary foundation in shaping a green future.
"We fully support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as Quality Education (SDG 4), Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7) and Climate Action (SDG 13)," she said when met after the opening of the congress, officiated by Department of Polytechnic Education and Community Colleges (JPPKK) deputy director (Research), Dr Siti Rosminah Md Derus.
Dr Salmi said ICGESD 2025 serves as an inclusive platform for knowledge and professional networking, providing opportunities for academics, students, industry professionals, and the public, to interact and share knowledge.
The congress received 275 research papers from participants in six countries worldwide.
"It is hoped that this congress will reinforce PUO's position as a leader in technical education and premier TVET hub in Southeast Asia, in line with the country's green and digital economy agenda," she said.
Meanwhile, PUO, in a statement, said the congress is the outcome of strategic collaboration with 20 partners from various academic institutions, industries, and non-governmental organisations.
Among the strategic partners involved are Universitas Negeri Malang, Politeknik Negeri Jakarta, Perak State Education Department, Malaysian Green Technology Society (MGTS), Green Safe Cities (GreSafe), Universiti Teknologi Mara, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, CIDB E-Construct Services Sdn Bhd, Digital Art Association of Malaysia, Prestige Geomatic Resources, ALLTERRA (M) Sdn Bhd, Land Surveyors Board of Malaysia, and Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP).
