BANDUNG, Oct 4 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian culinary showcase at The Westin Surabaya in East Java drew full houses and received strong reviews, prompting Tourism Malaysia to consider expanding its food promotion to other Indonesian cities.

Tourism Malaysia Jakarta deputy director Siti Hajar Mohd Yunus said the “Kitchen Take Over” collaboration, held from Sept 25 to 28, was the hotel’s longest-running culinary partnership this year.

“Seats were gone on the second and third nights, and even the mezzanine was packed,” she told Bernama, adding that Magnolia Restaurant was fully booked throughout the event.

Siti Hajar said that while every dish received positive feedback, the Char Kueh Teow and beef rendang were clear favourites, praised for their balance of Indonesian and Malaysian flavours.

Other highlights included ayam percik, with its rich marinade and smoky grilled flavour rarely found outside Malaysia, and the signature sago dessert, noted for its refreshing sweetness and delicate texture.

When asked which dish Indonesians should not miss, she pointed to Penang curry mee, with a broth that  layers coconut milk, curry spices, and herbs, complemented by toppings that add both texture and comfort.

“Penang curry mee really shows the heart of Malaysian street food culture – rich, spicy and aromatic.

“For Indonesian guests, it feels familiar because of the shared spices, yet has a distinct Malaysian depth of flavour,” she said.

Siti Hajar said she was informed that, following the success of the event in Surabaya, Marriott International sees significant potential to expand the promotion of Malaysian cuisine to other major Indonesian cities.

“The initiative will not only allow more Indonesians to discover and appreciate Malaysian flavours, but also strengthen cultural ties between the two nations,” she added.

The Westin Surabaya is part of Marriott International, a United States-based hospitality group that manages, franchises and licenses more than 9,600 properties across over 30 hotel brands in 143 countries and territories.
