PM Anwar Urges MPN To Focus On STEM, AI, Language Competency

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 3 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on the National Education Council (MPN) to address key issues such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), artificial intelligence (AI), and Malay language proficiency to strengthen the nation’s education system.

In a Facebook post, Anwar said he also highlighted the need to enhance English and History education, recognise the role of religious and traditional schools, and promote stronger collaboration between universities and the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM).

Chairing the MPN meeting earlier, Anwar discussed the overall direction of national education, including the council’s Terms of Reference, the Malaysia Education Development Plan (PPPM) 2026-2035, the Malaysia Higher Education Plan (PPTM) 2026-2035, and a review of General Studies (MPU) subjects.

He stressed that education reforms must involve all stakeholders, linking innovation, AI, religion, culture and social values to ensure the system builds identity, frees the mind and shapes the nation’s character.

“Our challenge is to embrace digitalisation and AI while staying grounded in the values, culture and faith that shape our national character. This is the balance we must maintain,” he said.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek in a Facebook post said the ministry presented the PPPM 2026-2035 at the meeting, which will replace the existing plan.

She said the new plan aims to build a more inclusive and sustainable education system to meet present and future challenges.

“MPN is a strategic initiative of the MADANI government to align the direction, policies and implementation of national education, from preschool to higher learning,” she said.

Fadhlina added that the Prime Minister placed special emphasis on STEM, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), digital education, as well as strengthening both Malay and English.

“As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. It requires strategic cooperation across ministries and agencies to uplift national education for the benefit of all Malaysian children,” she said.
