NEW YORK, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- ASEAN will continue to urge Myanmar to fully implement the Five-Point Consensus and support the Special Envoy’s efforts to facilitate dialogue among all stakeholders, with the aim of restoring a path toward national reconciliation.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan noted that these efforts have been upheld at all times by the ASEAN Member States.
He made these remarks at the Ministerial Meeting of the United Nations (UN) Group of Friends of Mediation, held in conjunction with the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), here on Thursday.
Myanmar has been embroiled in a protracted political and humanitarian crisis since the military ousted the democratically elected National Unity Government (NUG) on Feb 1, 2021.
In April the same year, ASEAN leaders held an emergency meeting and adopted the Five Point Consensus, which called, among others, for immediate cessation of violence, engagement of constructive dialogue with all stakeholders to restore peace and stability, and assessment of humanitarian aid to the people of Myanmar.
On the border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand, Mohamad said ASEAN will continue to engage the two neighbouring countries in meaningful dialogue and ensure their commitment to upholding the ceasefire.
“As ASEAN chair in 2025, we were called to respond and resolve the border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand.
“We aim for the deployment of an ASEAN Observers Team to maintain transparency on the ground,” he said.
The two neighbouring countries have been locked in a decades-long conflict over territories along their 817-kilometre shared border.
The dispute, which flared up on July 24 when both sides exchanged fire, came to an end on July 28 following an agreement reached between Cambodia and Thailand during a special meeting organised by Malaysia in Putrajaya.
