Abd Halim Finishes Sixth In 50M Freestyle Final Of World Para Swimming C'ships

SINGAPORE, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- National para swimmer Abd Halim Mohammad finished sixth in the men's 50-metre (m) freestyle S8 (physical impairment) event at the 2025 World Para Swimming Championships, here today.

The five-time gold medallist at the 2023 ASEAN Para Games clocked 27.29 seconds (s), slightly slower than his timing in the heats at the OCBC Aquatic Centre in the morning.

The 27-year-old clinched a spot in the final after finishing third overall in the heats with a new personal best of 27.16s, slightly faster than his previous time of 27.18s.

Ukrainian swimmer Eduard Horodianyn, who has already won a silver and bronze medal at the meet, secured the gold with a time of 26.18s.

Paris 2024 double gold medallist Callum Simpson of Australia claimed the silver with 26.21s, while American swimmer Noah Jaffee, who won gold in the 100m freestyle S8 at the World Championships in Manchester two years ago, took bronze.

Meanwhile, Malaysian para swimmer Brenda Anellia Larry failed to advance to the women's 50m freestyle S4 (physical impairment) final after finishing 13th overall in the heats, although she recorded a new personal best of 58.81s.

Only the top eight swimmers overall from the two heats advanced to the final.

She also did not qualify for the finals of the women's 100m freestyle S4 (physical impairment) and women's 50m backstroke S4 (physical impairment) events held earlier in the competition.

Brenda will next compete in the women's 200m freestyle S4 (physical impairment), scheduled for the final day of the championships on Saturday.

The 2025 World Para Swimming Championships, which end on Sept 27, mark the first time the event is being held in Asia.
