Uruguayan Football Giants Set To Light Up Malaysia In October Friendlies

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 (Bernama) -- The Uruguay national team - nicknamed La Celeste (The Sky Blue) - are set to unleash world-class talent and South American flair on Malaysian shores when they play two friendlies in October.

In a statement issued by the local organiser, Cohesion Prima, Uruguay’s friendlies against the Dominican Republic at the National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 10 and Uzbekistan on Oct 13 at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Malacca are being touted as the stage for La Celeste to showcase their flair, finesse and five-star skills to dazzle Malaysian spectators.

Marcelo Bielsa, the enigmatic Argentine now coaching Uruguay, is set to field his top stars, including the likes of Real Madrid midfield maestro Federico Valverde; former Liverpool star and “Captain Chaos” Darwin Nunez, who now plays for Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia; and Manchester United midfield enforcer Manuel Ugarte.

As such, Cohesion Prima has dubbed the friendlies as a celebration of the beautiful game in Southeast Asia, adding that fans Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and beyond are expected to fill the stands and feel the rhythm of South American football under the Malaysian night sky.

Meanwhile, Cohesion Prima representative Datuk K.S. Lai said the friendlies would mark a historic moment for Malaysian football. 

"Uruguay’s decision to play here is a nod to our region’s passion and we want fans from every corner of Southeast Asia to be a part of these two unforgettable nights,” he said.
