KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- A total of 100 Muslim asnaf students from Cambodia have been awarded full scholarships worth RM4.5 million by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) to continue their studies at three institutions in Malaysia.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said of the total number, 30 students will pursue various fields, including Islamic studies at the MAIWP Baitulmal Professional College, MAIWP International University College (UCMI) (20), and Dar Al-Hikmah College in Sungai Ramal (50).
“We have been thinking about how we can assist this minority Muslim group in Cambodia to further their education. There are financial constraints there, and this is where we step in to help these children receive the education they deserve.
“Education is the only way to improve the status and position of Muslims in any country,” he said after witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MAIWP and the Cambodian Islamic Development Foundation at the Batu Muda Campus here today.
MAIWP was represented by its acting chief executive officer, Datuk Mohd Nizam Yahya, while the Cambodian Islamic Development Foundation was represented by its deputy chairman and member of the Cambodian Parliament, Rofy Othsman.
In his speech, Mohd Na'im emphasised that cross-border education is a key to a sustainable future, in line with this year's ASEAN theme, which focuses on Inclusion and Sustainability.
He also expressed confidence that this collaboration will not only open academic opportunities for foreign students but will also serve as a regional cooperation model to strengthen the development of the ummah through education.
At the event, certificates of appreciation for the Cambodian International Student Scholarship Assistance were presented, along with cheques for the scholarship fund and commemorative plaques from MAIWP to the Cambodian delegation.
