JAKARTA, Sept 10 (Bernama) -- A total of 39 Malaysian Scouts are participating in the World Muslim Scout Jamboree in East Jakarta alongside 15,333 participants from 16 countries, marking the first global Muslim Scouts gathering of its kind.
The activities during the jamboree, being held from Sept 9 to 14, include a combination of rigorous, educational and camping activities which are aimed at promoting the spirit of brotherhood, harmony, and global peace, as well as to strengthen relations among the youth.
The Malaysian contingent comprises students and teachers from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pendidikan Khas Setapak, Kuala Lumpur; Malay College Kuala Kangsar, Perak; and Sri Ayesha Islamic School, Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor.
Other participating countries include Oman, Mauritius, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Brunei, Kuwait, Maldives, Algeria, and the United Kingdom.
Malaysia’s contingent leader, Ahmad Hafzan Hassan, said they wanted to observe how the Muslim Scout Jamboree is organised, and to give participants exposure to the unique cultures of other countries.
“Previously, they only learnt about foreign cultures, particularly Indonesia, through social media. Here, they have the opportunity to interact directly and gain a deeper understanding of the local community’s language and culture,” he told Bernama.
In addition, the programme also featured a Cultural Heritage Workshop on Indonesian batik and a traditional Angklung musical performance by the Directorate of Cultural Promotion under Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture.
The World Muslim Scout Jamboree is organised in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor, one of Indonesia’s leading Islamic educational institutions, and is taking place at the Cibubur Scout Campground.
