GURUN, Sept 24 (Bernama) -- A man was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today with the murders of a woman and a mobile phone trader on Sept 11.
The accused, Syed Al Iqbal Syed Shahruddin, 30, nodded in understanding after the charges were read before Magistrate Anis Suraya Ahmad, but no plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
For the first charge, he is accused of murdering Ku Asraf Ku Shaif @ Ku Shuib, 30, in front of a house at Taman Nona, Guar Chempedak, Yan, between 9 pm and 10 pm on Sept 11.
The private sector employee is also charged with murdering Nurul Nur Syamira Khamis, 28, at the same housing area during the same period.
Syed Al Iqbal was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or up to 40 years’ imprisonment. If not sentenced to death, the offender shall also be punished with no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction of both charges.
The accused was represented by lawyers Abdul Hayyi Salim, Diyana Ibrahim and Shameer Haziq Shaharuddin.
The court set Oct 21 for case mention.
