PUTRAJAYA, Sept 19 (Bernama) -- The Energy Commission (ST) has stepped up enforcement under the Electricity Supply Act 1990 (Act 447) and Gas Supply Act 1993 (Act 501), with twelve prosecutions in the courts this year.
In a statement today, ST said that these cases involve aggregate fines totalling RM200,140 for various violations, including electricity theft, illegal modification of installations resulting in a fatality, possessing unlabelled electrical equipment for sale, and conducting activities using gas without a licence.
The Commission stated that recent cases include charges for electricity theft under subsection 37(3)(e) of Act 447 against three companies at the Federal Territory of Labuan and Kota Kinabalu Sessions Courts on Aug 26 and 27, respectively.
“On Aug 26, the Federal Territory of Labuan Sessions Court imposed a RM50,000 fine upon LB Gases Hardware Sdn Bhd. Subsequently, on Aug 27, the Kota Kinabalu Sessions Court fined Sri Mas Foods Industries Sdn Bhd and Kim Kian Enterprise RM55,000 and RM50,000, respectively.
“All the companies have settled their fines,” said ST.
As the regulatory body for the national energy sector, ST consistently enforces the provisions of energy supply legislation.
These publicised prosecutions serve as a timely reminder to all parties to refrain from committing any offences relating to electricity and piped gas.
“ST treats such offences with the utmost seriousness, as they adversely impact not only the energy industry in financial terms, but also the stability of the electricity and piped gas supply systems, as well as public safety,” the statement stressed.
ST hoped that these strict actions would serve as a deterrent and compel all parties to comply with the relevant electricity and piped gas laws.
Furthermore, the Commission also welcomes public cooperation in reporting any unlawful activities involving the use of electricity and piped gas, including electricity theft.
Reports can be made via the eAduan ST system, accessible through its website at www.st.gov.my.
