MELAKA, Sept 7 (Bernama) -- Melaka is 90 percent prepared to host the 19th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC), with final preparations now underway.
State Secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad said the government is also coordinating logistics, opening ceremony preparations, programmes for accompanying persons, and cultural performances with the Ministry of Home Affairs.
"Hosting this prestigious event is a great honour and recognition for us as a preferred destination for high-level international meetings.
"The state government is proud to play a significant role in supporting regional cooperation to address increasingly complex transnational crimes, such as human trafficking, cybercrime, terrorism, arms smuggling, money laundering and migrant smuggling," he said in a statement today.
He added that over 300 delegates, comprising ASEAN representatives, dialogue partners China, Japan and South Korea, as well as observer nation Timor-Leste, will participate in the five-day meeting, which begins tomorrow.
He said the delegates will start arriving tomorrow, and the 19th AMMTC's opening ceremony will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Tuesday.
According to Azhar, the state government views the meeting as an opportunity to strengthen Melaka's ties with ASEAN nations and dialogue partners, enhancing Malaysia's global position in the process.
He added that it also presents a significant opportunity to promote Melaka as a world-class destination for both meetings and tourism.
Established in 1997, the AMMTC is the principal forum through which ASEAN coordinates its collective efforts to combat transnational crime.
The 19th meeting involves all ten ASEAN member states: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
The AMMTC’s primary purpose is to strengthen regional security by enabling member nations to coordinate policies, share information, and conduct joint training.
This year, the focus is on defining ASEAN's collective response to new and increasingly complex transnational crime challenges.
