Earthquake: All Public Infrastructure Unaffected - Johor Exco

JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 25 (Bernama) -- All public infrastructure in Johor, including roads, bridges, and dams, has been reported to be stable and unaffected following a minor 4.1-magnitude earthquake in Segamat yesterday morning.

State Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure, and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said that the Public Works Department (JKR) and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) had carried out initial monitoring within a five-kilometre radius from the reported epicentre.

“Preliminary checks were carried out on roads and bridges, while inspections were done on 47 bridges on state roads, 14 bridges, and 19 overhead pedestrian crossings on federal roads.

“Three major dams, the Bekak Dam in Segamat, the Sembrong Dam in Batu Pahat, and the Macap Dam in Kluang, have also been confirmed safe,” he said in a statement today.

He stated that Johor JKR will continue to conduct inspections and monitoring on all bridges, overhead pedestrian crossings, and roads within the affected area, adding that Johor JPS will ensure that the dams remain safe and stable.

“Should there be any impact or structural damage, immediate action will be taken by the authorities,” he added.

Yesterday, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) confirmed that a minor earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale was detected at 6.13 am in Segamat, followed by a second mild tremor with a magnitude of 2.8 in Yong Peng, about 28 kilometres northwest of Kluang.
