TUMPAT, July 11 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has agreed to the establishment of a MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) Ulul Albab in Tanah Merah following a request from the Tanah Merah UMNO Division, says Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
He said the proposal to set up the MRSM would be brought to the next MARA Council meeting, following confirmation that funding for the project had already been secured.
“I will table this matter at the upcoming MARA meeting. We will also resend an official letter to the Ministry of Economy to implement it,” he told reporters after attending the Tumpat UMNO Division Delegates’ Meeting at the Tumpat MRSM Hall here today, which was officiated by UMNO president Ahmad Zahid.
Asyraf Wajdi said the proposal had long been championed by the grassroots and was first raised by delegates from the Tanah Merah UMNO Division.
Earlier today, he also shared the proposal on his official Facebook page.
In the post, Asyraf Wajdi stated that the MRSM Ulul Albab in Tanah Merah would be the first of its kind in Kelantan.
“Indeed, all 57 MRSMs currently run the Ulul Albab programme in a mini or ‘Tamhidi’ format, which requires students to memorise at least five juzu’ (sections) of the Quran or selected surahs, including Juz Amma.
“In addition to the eight MRSMs that run the full Ulul Albab programme, MRSM Tanah Merah will become the ninth to implement it comprehensively,” he said.
He added that with the latest instruction and approval from Ahmad Zahid, the MRSM Tanah Merah project would be pursued immediately through the proper governance process to fulfil the aspiration of Tanah Merah UMNO, representing the voice of the people in Tanah Merah and Kelantan.
