The vessel’s arrival (since July 2) marks a significant milestone for the island, symbolising both cultural enrichment and international goodwill.

With more than 100 crew and passengers from 35 nationalities on board, the vessel was warmly received as it docked for its public engagement programme.

Tiong said the visit of Doulos Hope not only highlighted Labuan’s capacity to receive globally renowned ships, but also underscored the port’s logistical readiness and hospitality.

“A floating library with a legacy of inspiring minds, her arrival places Labuan once again on the international maritime map. Our team has worked closely with enforcement agencies to ensure that the vessel’s stay is efficient, secure, and welcoming…this is not just a symbolic visit, it brings tangible economic and social benefits to our community.

“Beyond books, Doulos Hope carries dreams and stories…the open library provides a platform for cultural exchange, knowledge-sharing, and global friendships,” he said, expressing hope for more such collaborations in the future during the launch held onboard the vessel today.

Doulos Hope director Khemraj Lakhan said the visit coincides with an exciting chapter in Labuan’s ongoing journey of development and international engagement.

“Our ships serve as platforms for cross-cultural exchange, volunteer service, and educational access…this aligns deeply with Malaysia’s national values of education, inclusivity, and regional leadership,” he said.

Lakhan praised Labuan’s warm hospitality and professionalism, commending the efforts of local agencies in ensuring smooth immigration, customs, and health procedures.

“The response from the people of Labuan has been overwhelming…we’ve seen families, schools, and communities from diverse backgrounds engaging enthusiastically with our crew,” he said.

The ship’s visit coincides with the Borneo Flora Festival, which Lakhan described as a “vibrant celebration of Labuan’s creativity, natural beauty, and cultural pride.”

Doulos Hope will remain berthed at Labuan Liberty Wharf until July 28, and the floating library is open to the public daily from 1pm to 9pm, except on Mondays.

Visitors can explore more than 120,000 books spanning multiple genres and languages, while engaging in cross-cultural dialogue and educational activities onboard.
