JOHOR BAHRU, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) now leads in employability rate of ‘highly skilled and premium-earning graduates’, said its vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Fauzi Ismail.
He said the achievement has changed the viewpoint of the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), which now makes the agenda of ‘high-income graduates’ a new focus in employability.
"We will continue to redouble our efforts in response to the recommendation of the Minister of Higher Education (Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin) at the 2023 Graduate Job Market Conference on Nov 1, which aims to increase the percentage of graduates earning a premium income of RM4,000 per month and above, by further boosting strategic collaboration of universities with industry and employers.
"In addition, we not only recorded an excellent Graduate Employability (GE) percentage, but even more proudly, as many as 90 UTM (Bachelor's degree) graduates managed to earn a premium income of over RM10,000," he said in a statement today.
Ahmad Fauzi said the implementation of the initiative was seen to coincide with the government's recommendations in creating and developing the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is the first of its kind in Malaysia, with an allocation of RM20 million, as announced in Budget 2024 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
"Taking into account the current explosion of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, UTM plays a role in taking advantage of the opportunities and challenges that exist to increase the success of higher education and human capital by polishing the potential of graduates who are capable of creating AI technology and not just be users," he added.
A total of 7,804 graduates including recipients of Academic Prizes are involved in the 67th UTM Convocation being held at Dewan Sultan Iskandar here over six days beginning last Saturday.
UTM has produced 225,394 graduates, with 11,301 of them being international graduates from 100 countries, since 1972.
