Batik shirts by inmates best-sellers at Kelantan AKM Tour

KOTA BHARU, July 24 (Bernama) -- Mypride products produced by Pengkalan Chepa Prison, which include batik shirts made by prisoners, were able to rake in encouraging sales at the Kelantan edition of Jelajah Aspirasi Keluarga Malaysia (AKM) or Malaysian Family Aspirations Tour.

Pengkalan Chepa Prison exhibitor Noraznin Mohd Nor said Mypride products managed to generate  almost RM7,000 in sales during the Kelantan AKM Tour at the Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium, here, from last Friday until today.

She said the AKM Tour was a good platform to promote handmade products and the creativity of Pengkalan Chepa Prison inmates to the people of Kelantan.

“Each item sold is handmade. They are produced as a result of a rehabilitation programme introduced to hone the skills of inmates at Pengkalan Chepa Prison. As for batik and songket products, they are produced by male inmates while food products are made by their female counterparts.

“The best-selling product throughout the AKM Tour is batik shirts,” said the Pengkalan Chepa Prison Vocational and Industrial officer.

The booth promotes batik shirts with various designs and colours using the satin fabric that are sold at prices between RM60 and RM200 while the most expensive product is a songket cloth which is worth more than RM2,000.

In addition, it also sells kaftans for adults that are priced at RM55 each and food products such as layer cakes and butter cakes, at a price of RM25 each.

Nur Ain Abdul Latiff, 29, who bought two batik shirts for her husband, said she was very interested in the pattern of batik shirts and their reasonable price.
