KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Bernama) -- Two journalists and a photographer from the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) were runners-up in their respective categories of the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) Petronas Malaysian Journalism Awards at the 2022 MPI Petronas Malaysian Press Night tonight.
Journalists Kurniawati Kamarudin and Sakini Mohd Said from Bernama’s Features and Issues Desk were joint runners-up in the Excellent Feature Writing category for their four articles entitled ‘Malaysia Berpotensi Kehilangan Hutan Paya Gambut’, ‘Hutan Simpan Kuala Langat Utara “Nadi Kehidupan” Masyarakat Orang Asli’, ‘Demi Survival Hutan Simpan Kuala Langat Utara’ and ‘Nasib HSKLU: Masihkah Ada Harapan Untuk Terus Kekal’.
Meanwhile, Bernama photographer Harry Salzman Abu Bakar emerged as runner-up in the Excellent Photo Essay Category for his work entitled ‘Pengebumian Jenazah Pesakit COVID-19’.
Both winners take home RM1,500 in cash and certificates.
Kurniawati, when met at the event, said her journey to the top three was a challenge due to tough competition.
She said the achievement would spur her team and the entire Bernama fraternity to produce even better pieces.
“May it inspire young journalists to send in more of their work,” she said.
Harry Salzman said that he felt honoured to be able to represent Bernama in the awards, adding that his photo essay was aimed at conveying the funeral and sadness endured by family members who lost their loved ones to COVID-19.
Meanwhile, MPI chairman and chief executive officer Datuk Dr Chamil Wariya said in his speech that this year’s participation was not dominated nor monopolised by legacy or traditional media but witnessed participation from digital media, showcasing the new media and journalism landscape.
“MPI does not look at pieces sent based on traditional or digital media, but based on platform. This is because news products in the real world can now be accessed online as well,” he added.
