It Is Time For Malaysia To Elevate TVET As A Primary Career Path

28/04/2026 10:56 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 (Bernama) -- In developed countries, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) powers economies and creates wealth.

It is time for Malaysia to recognise TVET not as a backup plan, but as a primary career choice worthy of being strengthened and celebrated.

Secretary of the 2026 Bumiputera Education Congress, Datuk Dr Khairul 'Azmi Mohamad, said the public perception of TVET as a second-class option must be erased, as the field is now capable of producing highly skilled professional talent.

"The reality today, including in developed nations, proves that TVET is a pathway to high income and a new source of wealth. We are not talking about TVET in the context of manual labour or the like.

“Instead, we want to see those who master TVET knowledge reach the highest possible level," he said as a guest on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara programme titled 'Bumiputera Education Congress Driving the Future', today.

Khairul 'Azmi said the Congress, scheduled for May 1 at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre in conjunction with UMNO's 80th anniversary, aims to reassess education policies and tackle future challenges.

"This Congress is focused on transforming our education landscape. From there, we will chart the way forward for the Bumiputera community," he said.

Khairul 'Azmi said the Congress will also tackle the critical issue of ensuring that tahfiz students obtain national academic qualifications, so they are not sidelined from the mainstream education system.

"It would be ideal if they were part of this system too. This is where we want to uplift them, so that their system and curriculum can be monitored, given added value, and at the same time, they possess a national qualification," he said.
