PLANMalaysia to finetune guidelines on banning use of certain micromobility vehicles

13/06/2022 09:51 PM

PUTRAJAYA, June 13 (Bernama) -- The Department of Town and Country Planning would finetune the guidelines on banning the use of certain micromobility vehicles on roads soon, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

In his post on his official Facebook page today after having a dialogue session with micromobility vehicle entrepreneurs and associations at the ministry, he said the government had never forbidden or prevented the use of such vehicles in a safe and controlled environment.

"The ban is only applicable on roads to ensure public safety," he said, adding that the decision was made after taking into consideration public views including through engagement sessions with the stakeholders such as the local authorities.

Following the announcement last April 26 on the immediate ban on the use of three types of micromobility vehicles, namely, the moped, personal mobility devices (PMDs) and personal mobility aids (PMA) on roads, the Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Housing and Local Government collaborated to draw up the guidelines.

These guidelines are needed to determine the jurisdiction of the parties involved with regard to such vehicles as a whole.

“I prioritise road safety and want our roads to be safe for all users,” said Wee in his Facebook post.
