SHAH ALAM, Sept 20 -- The Communications and Multimedia Ministry will look into the possibility of providing free Internet or broadband network services at institutions of higher learning in the country.
Deputy Minister Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin said it was important to ease the financial burden of the students, especially those who could not afford to subscribe to Internet service.
“We plan and want to discuss on how we can provide free Internet or Wi-Fi at all campuses of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).
"At the same time, we also want it to be extended to other institutions of higher learning in order to reduce the huge expenses that students have to bear, thus helping those who are from poor families," he said after closing UiTM Student Representatives Council (MPP) Conference for the 2019/2020 session here today.
Zahidi said it was important to strengthen the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) among student leaders as well as students considering the world landscape had changed to digital.
Meanwhile, he said the ministry also wants to get help from the private sector such as telecommunication companies to donate laptops to the students in need.
