BEIJING, Nov 7 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) has been selected to partner with top global news organisations and Chinese universities in adopting the Global Media Initiative for the Joint Development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Application Standards.
Launched by China's Xinhua News Agency in conjunction with the 7th World Media Summit (WMS), the initiative underlined a framework for developing a standards system for AI application in the news industry, as well as data governance and content safety risk mitigation practices.
Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai represented the news agency in receiving the certification for its participation in the initiative during the opening session of the summit held at the iconic Great Hall of the People here today.
Among notable news organisations involved were TASS Russian News Agency, Union of OIC News Agencies, Qatar News Agency, China Media Group, as well as several renowned Chinese institutions, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, China Academy of Information and Communications Technology and the China National Institute of Standardisation.
Commenting on the initiative, Wong said it was a crucial step in ensuring that AI technology applications would be developed collaboratively for the benefit of all.
He said it is important to note that AI applications are not cheap, thus making it unaffordable for some countries and organisations
"I believe if we were to work together in advancing AI and explore new knowledge, we would be able to bridge that affordability gap," he said.
The 7th WMS brought together nearly 500 media practitioners and industry stakeholders from more than 100 countries. It was jointly organised by Xinhua News Agency and the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality under the theme “Media in the Intelligent Age: From Consensus to Action”.
Established in 2009 by prominent international media organisations, including Xinhua News Agency, The Associated Press, Reuters, TASS and Kyodo News, the WMS has served as a platform for high-level exchanges and coordination among global media stakeholders.
