MMM Welcomes Review Of Media Mulia Restructuring, Calls For Concrete Measures To Protect Employees

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 (Bernama) -- Media Mulia Sdn Bhd's commitment to review its business model must be followed by concrete measures that provide clarity and reassurance to affected employees, said the Malaysian Media Council (MMM).

The council said the restructuring of operations at Utusan Malaysia and Kosmo! should not leave employees facing prolonged uncertainty over their jobs and future livelihoods.

"MMM recognises the financial pressures faced by the company and the media industry.

“At the same time, all affected employees should receive clear written information on their employment status, the timelines and options available to them,” it said in a statement today.

It added that any measures taken should comply fully with applicable employment laws, contractual obligations and established principles of procedural fairness.

The council urged Media Mulia management to engage meaningfully with employees to clearly explain the options being considered and ensure that any decisions affecting their employment are based on objective assessments and a fair, transparent and properly documented process.

“Where concerns over individual performance arise, employees must be clearly informed of the specific shortcomings identified, given a reasonable opportunity to respond, and provided with appropriate guidance, support and sufficient time to demonstrate improvement before any adverse employment decision is made.

“Such decisions should be consistent, proportionate and in accordance with applicable employment laws and principles of natural justice,” it said.

The council also called on the company to give serious consideration to all reasonable alternatives that could prevent unnecessary job losses, while ensuring that employees’ rights and welfare remain protected.

MMM said it was prepared to engage with Media Mulia management, employees and relevant stakeholders to explore practical solutions that balance the company’s long-term sustainability with the welfare of its workforce.

“The survival of media organisations and the protection of media workers must not be treated as competing priorities. Both are essential to the future of Malaysian journalism,“ it added.

On Thursday, Media Mulia's management met Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil to discuss the company's restructuring. Representatives from MMM also attended the meeting, which sought to find the best way forward to safeguard the welfare of media practitioners.

According to MMM, Fahmi expressed his willingness during the meeting to explore solutions to protect the livelihoods of affected media workers.
