KANGAR, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- The Election Commission (EC) has received official notification from Perlis State Legislative Assembly Speaker Rus’sele Eizan on the vacancy in the Mata Ayer state seat following the death of its incumbent, Wan Badariah Wan Saad.
EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said that, pursuant to Clause (5) of Article 55 of the Laws of the Constitution of Perlis, the Speaker had informed the EC that the vacancy did not need to be filled as more than three years had elapsed since the current State Legislative Assembly first convened.
"As such, no by-election will be held for the N.04 Mata Ayer state constituency in Perlis," he said in a statement here today.
Wan Badariah, 50, died at Tuanku Fauziah Hospital here at 4.26 pm last Saturday.
In the 15th General Election (GE15), Wan Badariah, who represented PAS under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) ticket, secured 4,419 votes to defeat Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Siti Berenee Yahaya, who polled 2,398 votes, and Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Amran Kamarudin, who garnered 794 votes, with a majority of 2,021 votes.
The late Wan Badariah had served as Perlis Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman under the administration of Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli.
