KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has decided not to extradite independent preacher Dr Zakir Naik to India and has made no commitment to do so, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

The Home Ministry said the decision was based on Malaysia's rights under Article 6 of the Extradition Treaty signed with India in 2010 and the provisions of the Extradition Act 1992.

It said the government had not received any new extradition requests to date.

"An official request for Dr Zakir Naik's extradition was previously received from the Indian government on Jan 19, 2018.

"The government also received a diplomatic note seeking reconsideration on May 29, 2020," said the ministry in a written reply to a question from Datuk Dr Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PN-Pengkalan Chepa).

Ahmad Marzuk sought an update on India's extradition request for Zakir, including when the latest official request was received.

He also asked whether the documents and evidence submitted met the requirements of the Extradition Act 1992 and the extradition treaty.

Zakir is wanted by Indian authorities in connection with several cases against him in his home country.
