GEORGE TOWN, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- The Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia (AKM) organised 3,774 activities nationwide from January to October to boost public understanding of MADANI policies and citizens' roles and responsibilities.

Its director-general, Datuk Dr Roslan Hussin, said the activities involved various segments of society, including youth, national leaders and corporate entities.

He said an analysis showed that more than 86 per cent of participants understood the MADANI policies, including the goals and direction of the concept introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“Alhamdulillah, public attendance at MADANI-related programmes has been very encouraging, particularly those closely related to current government policies, what the public needs to know and the role they should play as Malaysians,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after attending the ‘Aku Kasih Malaysia (AKM) – Northern Zone Deaf Community Programme’ at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) here today.

Roslan said AKM aimed to reach 1.5 million participants through 5,000 activities and programmes next year, compared with its target of nearly one million participants this year, which it was close to achieving.

He said the activities would continue nationwide to help more people understand the Malaysia MADANI concept and its benefits to public well-being.

Meanwhile, Roslan said the programme for the deaf community in the northern zone, comprising Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak, was the first of its kind organised by AKM this year.

He said it aimed to familiarise the community with national policies and ensure access to information on governance and nationhood.

“AKM is also open to expanding similar programmes to the central and southern zones, as well as Sabah and Sarawak, through cooperation with relevant associations,” he said.

On accessibility for persons with disabilities (PwD), particularly the deaf community, at National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI), Roslan said a proposal to provide sign language facilities at the centres would be referred to the relevant authorities for consideration.

He said this would help ensure that members of the deaf community could participate in programmes and benefit equally, as NADI centres served various segments of society.
