KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 (Bernama) -- The process of disbursing Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) payments to the next of kin of Malaysians who perished in the Nepal-Tibet flood tragedy is expected to be expedited, with payments scheduled for Nov 4, according to Malaysia Solidarity Families in Hope (MASFIH).
MASFIH coordinator and spokesperson Dr Manivannan Rethinam said the development had been conveyed to several families contacted by PERKESO, with the process of collecting supporting documents now being expedited to facilitate the disbursement.
He said PERKESO had begun contacting the next of kin identified as eligible for payments through several channels, including available telephone numbers, employers and social media.
“Following the meeting with the Human Resources Minister (KESUMA) on Wednesday, PERKESO began contacting the next of kin of individuals identified as eligible for payments yesterday,” he said in a statement today.
He said MASFIH also helped to facilitate the process by coordinating the contact details of the next of kin after highlighting several communication challenges at the initial stage.
“Following feedback received from several family members, I contacted the PERKESO deputy chief executive officer (Operations) to raise the matter,” he said.
Manivannan said he subsequently received a list of individuals identified by PERKESO as eligible for payments before updating the next of kin’s information, including telephone numbers and contact details, for resubmission to the agency.
He said the coordination had helped streamline communication and enabled the families concerned to be contacted directly for documentation and payment arrangements.
Meanwhile, MASFIH is still awaiting the government’s decision on the special financial assistance for 54 Malaysian families affected by the tragedy.
Manivannan said the organisation hoped the matter would be discussed at the Cabinet meeting today and result in a positive decision, followed by an official announcement and concrete measures to assist the affected families.
He said MASFIH would continue working with the authorities and relevant agencies to monitor developments and ensure that the welfare of all affected families continues to be given attention.
