KL Wellness City Supports Golden 9 Race 2026, Aim To Make Fitness Racing More Accessible To M'sians

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- The ADS Golden 9 Race 2026 aims to make fitness racing more accessible to Malaysians through a home-grown competition that encourages active lifestyles and greater community participation in sports.

KL Wellness City (KLWC) executive director Datuk Seri Dr Vincent Tiew said the competition would offer an affordable platform for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and the public to challenge themselves while embracing healthier lifestyles, especially since internationally organised fitness events can be expensive.

“We know internationally organised global events are very expensive. This is an event that is very affordable, I repeat, very affordable, quite easy, but very rewarding,” he said in his speech at the launch of ADS Golden 9 Race 2026 here yesterday.

Tiew said fitness racing was not solely about individual performance but also about fostering a sense of community through encouragement, teamwork and shared experiences.

He said the initiative reflected KLWC’s broader vision of developing an integrated health and wellness destination that brings together healthcare, wellness, lifestyle and community engagement.

He emphasised that while healthcare plays a vital role in treating and managing illnesses, adopting an active lifestyle and taking preventive measures are equally important for maintaining long-term health.

Tiew also hoped the competition would inspire more Malaysians, particularly the younger generation, to participate in sports and incorporate physical activity into their daily routines.

Meanwhile, National Sports Institute (ISN) chief executive officer Dr Vellapandian Ponnusamy said wider sporting opportunities were important in encouraging participation beyond elite athletes, including recreational athletes, working professionals and young people.

He said he was concerned about what he viewed as declining participation in physical activities among schoolchildren, observing that younger generations were increasingly engaged in computer games rather than outdoor activities and traditional sports.

Vellapandian suggested modifying fitness challenges similar to the Golden 9 Race for different age groups to help develop fundamental motor skills and encourage greater participation in sports at the grassroots level.

He said such activities could help build a stronger foundation for children to develop their physical capabilities and potentially progress to higher levels of sporting participation.

“Collaboration between the private sector, event organisers, and the sporting community can help create more opportunity for sports participation and also bring new audiences into fitness activities,” he said.

Scheduled for Dec 19 and 20 at KL Wellness City, Bukit Jalil, the HYROX-inspired competition will feature nine functional fitness stations across eight categories and 28 competitive divisions, with an estimated total cash prize pool of RM65,600. This is probably the highest cash prize offering for any endurance sport in Malaysia.

The race begins with a 500m run, followed by nine stations combining cardio and functional fitness challenges such as the RowErg, sandbag stationary lunges, farmer carry, SkiErg, deadball slams, sandbag bear hug carry, burpees and dumbbell thrusters, before ending with a final 500m run to the finish line.

Participants may compete in more than one category, including individual, doubles and relay formats, with registration now open and early-bird rates available until Nov 7 via https://www.ticketu.com.my/event/52653/golden-9-race-2026-beyond-the-finish-line

The organisers have set a preliminary planning target of about 2,000 contestant-equivalents, though the figure does not reflect confirmed registrations.

Organised by ADS with PUMP as the official co-host and fitness partner and KLWC as the venue partner, the competition themed ‘Beyond the Finish Line’ is sanctioned by the Malaysian Obstacle Racing and Sports Association (MORSA).
