Karate Aims To Win Six Gold Medals At 2027 SEA Games - Nur Azmi

SUBANG JAYA, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- After a successful two-gold medal haul at the 2026 Asian Games, the Malaysian Karate Federation (MAKAF) aims to win at least six gold medals at the 2027 South East Asian (SEA) Games in Malaysia, scheduled for Sept 18 to 29.

Its president, Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad said the target was realistic and could potentially be raised if national karate exponents show encouraging achievements at the South East Asian Karate Federation Championship scheduled for May next year.

“We have won seven gold in 2017, so karate is a medal contributor for the SEA Games. Only we want to add the medals to help the country to be overall champions in 2027,” he told reporters after the appreciation ceremony for national karate exponents who won medals at the Asian Games here today.

He also said that 18 events will be contested for karate at the SEA Games but it would be finalised soon in Kuala Lumpur.

On incentives to Asian Games medal winners, he said MAKAF provided cash incentives to athlets who managed to bring glory to the country in addition to electric cars to gold medal winners as a token of appreciation for their efforts.

“What’s important isn’t the price of the car, but the athlete’s spirit. What’s even more important is that we actually are helping the country win gold medals,” he said.

Meanwhile, under 50 kilogramme (kg) women’s kumite gold medal winner C Shamalarani and under 55 kg women’s kumite gold medal winner Adeola Fay Robert expressed their thanks to MAKAF for the gift of electric cars.

Adeola Fay said that the gift would inspire her to do better especially for the ASEAN University Games in Malaysia this December.,
