Safe Internet Campaign Must Become Culture In Society

07/10/2026 05:10 PM

KANGAR, Oct 7 (Bernama) -- The Safe Internet Campaign needs to be made a culture within society to ensure that the use of digital technology is done wisely, safely, ethically and responsibly, said Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Northern Region senior director Izani Othman.

Izani said that the development of technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), requires society to be more cautious when assessing authenticity of content before sharing or disseminating it on digital platforms.

"When something appears on the FYP (For You Page) or in a WhatsApp group, we need to pause for a moment, (and ask) is this true, where is the source from, and do I need to share it? Check the source and context. If in doubt, wait first. Not sure, don't share it," he said.

Izani said this while officiating at the Kangar parliamentary-level 'Karnival Komuniti Kempen Internet Selamat X Prints and Pixels Expo (PriPEX) 2026 at Dewan 2020 here today.

The carnival was organised in collaboration with Perlis MCMC and the Perlis Department of Education.

Izani said that the challenge of digital security is becoming greater as AI is capable of generating or altering images, videos, and voices to the point where they appear to be real, thus requiring users to increase their level of vigilance when receiving any information.

He said that society also needs to consider the impact on other individuals before sharing content because behind every screen are people with feelings, families and dignity.

"If the viral image or video involves our friend, don't add to the problem by spreading it further. Maybe he is feeling embarrassed, scared, or doesn't know who to turn to for help," he said.

Izani said that parents and teachers need to create a safe environment so that children are brave enough to share their experiences or problems related to Internet use and seek help when needed.

"Technology gives us opportunities. Knowledge helps us make choices. Responsibility, on the other hand, ensures that we and those around us remain safe," he said.

Meanwhile, he reminded content creators to produce their own work and respect copyright, privacy, and the rights of others when using digital platforms.

Izani also said that the organisation of PriPEX provides students with the opportunity to explore creativity through the production of images, videos, and designs that can be utilised for learning, portfolio building and digital economic opportunities.
