RM5 To RM6 Billion Needed For Federal Road Maintenance - Ahmad Maslan

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 (Bernama) -- The Works Ministry has requested sufficient allocation under Budget 2027 to cover the overall maintenance needs of federal roads nationwide.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan said the ministry required an allocation of between RM5 billion and RM6 billion to ensure that road quality and safety remained at an optimum level.

However, he said the Works Ministry received only RM3.18 billion in allocation this year, of which RM2.08 billion was allocated for Peninsular Malaysia, while Sabah received RM640 million and Sarawak RM461 million.

“Therefore, we have requested the Ministry of Finance to provide sufficient allocation in the upcoming budget,” he said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.

He said this in response to a supplementary question from Manndzri Nasib (BN-Tenggara), who asked about data on the ballot draw for the allocation of road maintenance project procurements and whether the allocation received by the ministry for maintenance works was sufficient.

On the allocation of road maintenance project procurements, Ahmad said RM700 million had been specifically allocated to benefit small contractors in the G1 to G4 classes through a ballot draw.

He said the ballot draw method was implemented to ensure that the procurement process for maintenance works at the ministry level remained transparent.

“As for the ballot draw, in 2026, the allocation for G1 to G4 contractors to benefit small contractors amounted to RM700 million, with RM300 million for Peninsular Malaysia, while Sarawak and Sabah received RM200 million each,” he said.
