HYDERABAD, Oct 2 (Bernama) -- Police in central Delhi arrested hundreds of protesters during a rally against the country's chief election commissioner.

More than 700 political activists and students were taken into custody at Jantar Mantar, according to a report by news agency PTI.

The protest site is a short distance from the Election Commission's office and the parliament building.

The gathering was unauthorised. Delhi police earlier announced that no protests would be allowed to "ensure public safety, maintenance of public order, and smooth traffic movement."

The youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement has demanded chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in which millions of voters have been deleted from electoral rolls.

India's financial capital of Mumbai has seen heavy deployment of security forces in the Shivaji Park area since Thursday in view of a planned protest on Friday over the same issue.

Mumbai police earlier denied permission for a protest in the public park, saying it was "not empowered to grant permission for any gathering at Shivaji Park."
