European Diplomatic Missions Extend Condolences Over Passing Of Tun Dr Siti Hasmah

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29 (Bernama) -- Foreign missions and diplomats in Malaysia continued to convey their condolences over the passing of Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali on Monday, honouring her contributions to the nation, especially in medicine and public health.

The British High Commission in Malaysia paid tribute to the wife of former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, remembering her as a pioneering doctor and public health figure who embodied warmth, grace and humility.

Acting Deputy British High Commissioner Ruzina Hasan, who attended the state funeral and signed the condolence book on behalf of the British High Commission on Monday, said that she was solemnly moved by the tributes paid to Dr Siti Hasmah.

“I attended the State Funeral in honour of Tun Dr Siti Hasmah and was solemnly moved by the outpouring of sympathy and tributes.

“Tun Dr Siti Hasmah will be fondly remembered for her warmth, grace and humility, as well as for being one of Malaysia’s earliest women doctors and a pioneer in public health,” Ruzina said in a message shared with Bernama by the High Commission.

The Embassy of Italy in Kuala Lumpur also expressed its deepest condolences over Dr Siti Hasmah’s passing in a message posted on its official social media channels.

It described her as a pioneering physician and distinguished public servant who devoted her life to medicine, public health and the wellbeing of Malaysians.

“Her enduring commitment to sports, particularly badminton, and to cultural pursuits, including her love of the violin and classical music, further enriched her remarkable legacy of service to the nation,” the embassy said.

It also extended its heartfelt sympathies to Dr Mahathir, their family and loved ones, as well as the people of Malaysia.

The Delegation of the European Union to Malaysia also extended its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Dr Siti Hasmah.

In a caption accompanying a photograph of Dr Siti Hasmah posted on its official Instagram account, @euinmalaysia, the delegation remembered her for her distinguished service to Malaysia and contributions on the global stage.

“A true trailblazer, she amplified the voice of Malaysian women on the global stage - from representing Malaysia in Vienna and Geneva to champion causes such as women's empowerment, drug-abuse prevention and mental health to engaging with key leaders and institutions in Brussels.

“Her legacy of compassion, service and international friendship will be remembered with great respect,” the delegation said.

Meanwhile, Slovak Ambassador to Malaysia Peter Spisiak and the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Kuala Lumpur, in a letter of condolence shared with Bernama, extended their deepest condolences and expressed profound sympathy to Dr Siti Hasmah’s family.

The letter said Dr Siti Hasmah would be remembered with deep respect for her distinguished service to Malaysia and her longstanding contributions to the nation and its people.

Dr Siti Hasmah passed away at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur on Monday morning at the age of 100, and was laid to rest at Pusara Negara, Precinct 20, Putrajaya the same day.
