KUANTAN, Sept 19 (Bernama) -- The Pahang Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MUIP) has provided RM22 million in various forms of educational aid to students from asnaf (zakat recipient) families in Pahang as of today, including those pursuing studies at higher education institutions (IPT).
MUIP deputy chief executive officer (Baitulmal and Operations) Datuk Dr Asmadi Abdul Rahman said 20 asnaf students who obtained excellent results in the 2025 Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examination and secured places at public universities received an initial contribution of RM2,000 each.
"Of the 30 names we obtained from the Pahang State Education Department (JPNP), 20 have successfully secured places at public universities," he said after the 2026 Excellent Asnaf Children Educational Zakat Distribution Ceremony here today.
The ceremony was officiated by MUIP chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad Hairi Hussain.
Asmadi said MUIP also provided monthly assistance of up to RM500 to students based on their needs, with assessments taking into account their study location and cost of living.
"Perhaps they only need RM300 in expenses, for example in Kelantan or Terengganu where the cost of living is cheaper. But if they further their studies at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) or Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), it needs to be higher because it is in Johor," he said.
He said the assistance could be continued for as long as the students required it, including specific needs in their final year of study, such as project-related expenses.
Meanwhile, he said MUIP was also considering providing laptops to students after they entered university, based on their individual needs and fields of study.
Students who received offers to study overseas could also be considered for MUIP assistance based on need, he added.
