Malaysia, New Zealand Eye Deeper Ties Ahead Of 70th Diplomatic Anniversary

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is seeking to deepen practical cooperation and strengthen people-to-people ties with New Zealand as the two countries prepare to mark 70 years of diplomatic relations in 2027.

Malaysian High Commissioner to New Zealand Abu Bakar Mamat said their enduring friendship and longstanding ties provide a strong foundation for further advancing the Strategic Partnership established in 2023.

“We celebrate the people and friendships that have shaped Malaysia’s journey and continue to connect us with the world,” he said during a reception marking Malaysia’s 69th National Day and 63rd Malaysia Day at Rumah Malaysia in Wellington.

Abu Bakar also recognised the Malaysian community and students in New Zealand as an important bridge between the two countries.

Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Malaysia MADANI: Kesejahteraan Dinikmati”, he emphasised the importance of ensuring that national progress creates opportunities for all Malaysians.

The High Commissioner also paid tribute to New Zealand personnel who served in Malaya and Malaysia between 1949 and 1966, acknowledging their courage and sacrifice as an enduring part of the two countries’ shared history.

Earlier that day, he joined New Zealand’s Tertiary Education Minister Penny Simmonds at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park to honour the personnel.

The reception brought together New Zealand Government representatives, members of the diplomatic corps, defence personnel, veterans, business and community leaders, as well as members of the Malaysian diaspora.

Deputy Secretary, Americas and Asia Group at New Zealand’s Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry, Grahame Morton, delivered remarks on behalf of the New Zealand Government.
